In this exclusive feature, Kerri-Ann Santaguida, Vice President and General Manager of Merchant Services at American Express Canada, shares how small business support, strategic investment, and community engagement are helping independent restaurants build long-term resilience. A seasoned business leader, Kerri-Ann oversees a national team driving innovation in merchant payment solutions and leads initiatives such as American Express Canada’s Shop Small programs, supporting entrepreneurs and local businesses across the country.

Through American Express Canada’s Backing International Small Restaurants program, Kerri-Ann highlights the importance of supporting independent restaurants and strengthening local economies. In 2026, the initiative will award 20 independent restaurants in Toronto and Montreal grants of $20,000 CAD each, helping businesses invest in growth, recovery, and long-term success. With a strong commitment to small business development, inclusive leadership, and community impact, Kerri-Ann continues to champion opportunities that empower Canadian entrepreneurs.

Why is American Express continuing to invest in the Backing International Small Restaurants program

Independent restaurants are so much more than places to eat. They’re an important part of what makes our neighbourhoods unique and our communities vibrant. That’s why we’re proud to continue supporting them through the Backing International Small Restaurants program, now in its fifth year. Through this funding, we’re helping restaurant owners make meaningful improvements to their businesses and invest in their long-term success.

What impact has the program had on independent restaurants in Canada

Over the past four years in Canada, the Backing International Small Restaurants grants program has provided almost $1 million CAD in grants to more than 50 restaurants.

What’s great about this program is seeing how restaurant owners put the funding to work in ways that make a real difference to their businesses. From expanding seating and upgrading kitchen equipment to improving accessibility and creating more family-friendly spaces, these investments are helping restaurants grow, strengthen their operations and better serve their communities.

Why are independent restaurants so important to local communities and economies

Independent restaurants play such an important role in our communities. They bring people together, create jobs and contribute to the unique character of our neighbourhoods. They’re often the places where people gather, connect and celebrate special moments. When we support independent restaurants, we’re also investing in the communities they help make stronger and more vibrant.

Who is eligible for the 2026 grants, and how can recipients use the funding

This program is designed to help restaurant owners take the next step in their business, whether that’s expanding their operations, making much-needed improvements or investing in their long-term growth.

Eligible independent restaurants in Toronto and Montreal can apply for one of 20 grants of $20,000 CAD each by November 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

The program is administered by the International Downtown Association Foundation and anyone interested in more information about eligibility or how to apply can visit downtown.org/foundation.

How does this program reflect American Express Canada’s broader commitment to small businesses

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities and a vital part of our economy. But we also know that running a small business isn’t easy. Having access to the right funding, resources and support can make a real difference in helping business owners succeed.

That’s why supporting small businesses has long been at the heart of what we do at American Express. Through programs like Backing International Small Restaurants that offer direct grant funding, or marketing initiatives like Shop Small and Local Gems that help bring more customers through the door, we’re delivering on our commitment to small businesses.
