BENTGABLENITS is a combination of the surnames of Brenda Bent, Karen Gable, and Angelo Nitsopoulos. Their love for vintage items and obsession with collecting led to the founding of the vintage clothing brand BENTGABLENITS.
The story of BENTGABLENITS started with a gift that Karen and Brenda customized out of a Nike T-shirt for a friend by applying a piece of velvet to the comma. Angelo Nitsopoulos, a collector of vintage pieces and close friend of Bent’s sons, was around that day and immediately spotted that the design had great potential.
Bent and Gable are two interior designers, and Nitsopoulos is a vintage fashion collector. Though they look like an unlikely team, they came together to upcycle vintage garments into covetable wares.
They are a close-knit team that has been designated clear responsibilities from the start of their operations. In BENTGABLENITS, Bent and Gable are responsible for the design and production. At the same time, Nitsopoulos takes care of brand building and promotion on social media and e-commerce platforms like Hypebeasts.
The trio has a sustainable take on apparel that comes from a shared fixation on old stuff. This includes assorted knick-knacks, designer menswear, taxidermied birds, and dollhouse miniatures. Soon, what started as a flea market hobby turned into a passionate business with a purpose.
Redefining Sustainability
Brenda Bent launched the label BENTGABLENITS in 2019 with Karen Gable, her long-time partner in an interior-design practice, and Angelo Nitsopoulos. The company, abbreviated BGN, has created unique collections made from used clothing, materials, hardware, and trims.
They began their business operation by turning the second floor of Bent’s house into a workspace, which eventually became a repertoire of everything vintage. BGN sources their materials from private vendors and wholesalers that specialize in rag-picking. These “old” clothes are remodeled with laces, threads, beads, and anything and everything that makes them stylish and wearable.
BENTGABLENITS is a design collective dedicated to zero waste. They approach each design from the standpoint of “re-invention,” carefully choose iconic, high-quality pre-existing clothing and vintage trims, and work to give each piece new life while manufacturing in a way that has the least negative impact on the environment.
Their goal is to decrease excess at the artisanal and industrial levels, connect creativity and sustainability, and give each garment a fresh, modern look one at a time. They don’t follow trends; instead, they only try to prolong the life and value of pre-existing clothing.
