In this exclusive feature, Dr. Eric Adebayo, Owner of Eric the Tech, shares how accessible technology support and digital education are helping individuals and small businesses overcome everyday technology challenges. Based in Ajax, Ontario, Eric is a CompTIA A+ certified technician and technology educator, combining technical expertise with patient, personalized guidance to make technology easier to understand and use.
Through Eric the Tech, Eric provides computer repairs, IT support, cybersecurity solutions, and digital literacy training across Durham Region. From protecting businesses against online scams to improving network security and technology efficiency, Eric is helping small businesses stay connected, secure, and productive while empowering communities to use technology with greater confidence.
What inspired you to start Eric the Tech, and how does your background in economics and teaching shape your approach
After more than 13 years in computer repair and tech support, I’d also spent many hours helping my own parents and friends’ parents with technology. I saw how much people needed patient, practical support, so I started Eric the Tech to make technology less intimidating. My economics background encourages me to focus on practical value, while teaching has shown me that a good solution should help people understand what to do next time, too.
How do you help seniors and less-confident technology users feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace
I make it clear that no question is silly. I explain things in plain language, take one step at a time, and never rush someone or make them feel bad for needing a step repeated. The goal is for people to feel comfortable using their devices—not just to get through one appointment.
What everyday scams and technology risks do you see most often, and what simple precautions should households and small businesses take
Common concerns include scam messages and fake support requests, malware, weak or reused passwords, and losing files without a backup. Pause before clicking unexpected links or sharing passwords or security codes. Use unique passwords, enable multi-factor authentication where available, keep devices updated, and back up important files. If a message creates urgency, verify it through a trusted phone number or website instead of replying.
For small businesses without an in-house IT team, which technology problems deserve attention before they cause costly disruptions
Prioritize reliable backups that you can restore, secure accounts and devices, updated systems, and a stable network. Also make sure essential tools—like email, business software, and printers—are configured and working properly. Problems in these areas can interrupt work or put business data at risk. My business services include proactive maintenance, cybersecurity, backup planning, network support, and software configuration.
Why is teaching clients to use technology confidently just as important as fixing their devices
A repair solves the immediate problem, but understanding gives people more independence afterward. When clients learn to use their devices safely and manage everyday tasks, technology becomes less stressful and more useful. That’s why I combine troubleshooting with patient, step-by-step teaching.
