Business Woman of the Month: Ann Baiden

Ann Baiden on Creating Promotional Products that Deliver Real Results

What if the most powerful expression of your brand was something people could hold onto-literally?

For over 25 years, Ann Baiden has redefined what promotional products can be. When executed with intention, they become far more than giveaways, and instead evolve into immersive brand experiences designed to connect, inspire, and drive measurable results.

When done right, these products aren’t discarded; they become lasting expressions of a brand’s message, values, and story. This is exactly what Innovatex Solutions delivers to its clients, whether they are leading global organizations or local small businesses.

As Co-Founder and CEO of the proudly Canadian and certified woman-owned promotional products company, Ann Baiden leads a team dedicated to helping businesses build brand value, foster lasting loyalty, and drive revenue through thoughtfully curated product experiences.

From Gifting to Award‑Winning Company

Following graduation from the first class of Women’s Studies majors at Western University, Ann realized she had a knack for making custom gift baskets after an accident left her friend injured and in need of some cheering up. She delivered this cheer in the form of a curated gift basket, an act that sparked her first venture, Something Special, a gift basket business head-quartered in her parents’ garage. Six years later, a mutual friend introduced Ann to Tammy Rutledge at a Blue Jays game, and opened the door to a new opportunity.  Ann sold Tammy some gift baskets and later joined her at Mediatex, a promotional products company as an Account Manager, while continuing the gift basket business at night. This was a fitting role for Ann; having grown up in the automotive industry, she knew a thing or two about sales. Long hours and hard work resulted in both strong sales and relationships. In 2000, Tammy & Ann joined forces and became business partners as co-founders of Innovatex Solutions.

Armed with 2 cell phones, the two women faced numerous challenges as a start up, including finding an appropriate office space, since working atop a pool table would not work forever. Over the next decade, Ann and Tammy strengthened and scaled Innovatex through all of life’s ups and downs, including moves, Ann’s growing family, a recession and personal losses. Following Tammy’s retirement in 2010, Ann remained at the helm, where she now leads a team of creative, energetic, and strategic employees, each committed to their own professional growth in the industry.

Today, Innovatex has grown into an award-winning company that serves companies in Canada and abroad. Ann positioned Innovatex as an extension of her clients’ brands, rather than simply a product distributor.

The company’s objective is to elevate brands while providing a smooth customer experience at competitive costs. Innovatex specializes in personalized promotional products, clothing, and corporate gifts, but its true distinction lies in strategic thinking: each item must promote brand visibility, customer and employee loyalty, and, ultimately, higher sales and profits.

And this year marks a quarter-century of success.

Innovatex Solutions Crafting Promotional Products that Truly Connect

With a full-service approach spanning creative ideation, sourcing, kitting, and logistics, Innovatex delivers what they call “the whole package.”

Creativity involves matching clients with the right product (not just any product) that aligns with brand personality and campaign goals. Strategy entails matching things to the target audience, channel, and intended action, ranging from trade exhibits and onboarding to loyalty programs, Gift with Purchase and corporate gifts.

Innovatex offers a diverse range of products, including branded garments and accessories, drinkware, bags, writing instruments, technology, eco-friendly choices, custom kitting, and unique fulfillment tactics. Each project is handled “as if it were our own marketing dollar,” with a focus on budget, timeframes, and ROI.

Under Ann’s guidance, the company has become known for “jaw-dropping promotional packages” and for its ability to meet unreasonable schedules without compromising quality. Innovatex’s strong supplier relationships and industry-certified experience enable precise execution of complicated projects, such as multi-location drops and personalized kits. According to a recent CanadianSME feature, Innovatex is a “catalyst for brand elevation,” emphasizing creative problem-solving and client-driven solutions that foster real connections rather than cluttering desk drawers.

Innovatex has won numerous industry accolades for its results-oriented promotions over the past 25 years, demonstrating that strategic marketing can lead to measurable business results.

Raising the Bar on Professional Standards

Ann has made significant investments in her career, making her one of the most highly qualified executives in the promotional items sector in North America. In 2014, she became a Certified Advertising Specialist (CAS), and in 2016, she became a Master Advertising Specialist (MAS).

She became the first female Canadian in 2020 and one of just three individuals in the nation to obtain MAS+ accreditation from Promotional Products Association International (PPAI). She further demonstrated her dedication to quality and education in 2024 by adding the MASI designation.

Her knowledge is well-known. Promotional Product Professionals of Canada (PPPC), PPAI,  other associations, and business peers regularly invite Ann to speak on panels, podcasts and at industry gatherings, such as educational sessions. She offers helpful advice on creating memorable, on-brand, and quantifiable campaigns in interviews and videos such as “The Art of Promotional Brilliance.”

In 2025, she added to her distinguished credentials by completing Harvard Business School Executive Education, WPO:Leading Business And Personal Transitions.

Women’s Empowerment and Community Leadership

Supporting women’s causes is woven into the fabric of Innovatex. From earning her Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies to supporting various women’s causes and groups, Ann values the connections made through women-led organizations and committees. She is a proud member of the Women Business Enterprises Canada Council (WBE Canada), WEConnect International,  Women Presidents Organization (WPO), and a mentor for the Scotiabank Women’s Initiative. She was also the Co-Chair of the Promotional Products Industry Women’s Empowerment for 8 years. This two-day educational event brings together female distributors, suppliers and multi-line reps from across Canada and the United States.

In 2020, Innovatex partnered with Yellow Brick House to offer a free “Confidence Duffle” to women affected by domestic abuse who made qualifying purchases from a Made-in-Canada catalogue. To date, Innovatex has donated over 1000 Confidence Duffles and Comfort Blankets to women and children escaping abusive and violent homes. Innovatex also supports local and regional organizations and not-for-profits, including girls hockey teams and Women Inspired to Help Markham Stouffville Hospital. For her activism and community spirit, Ann was recognized with the PPPC Humanitarian Award and in 2022, she was also recognized with the WBE Leader Award.

Innovatex Solutions is also a member of the Central York Chambers of Commerce and the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce.

Lessons for Small Business Owners and Marketers

For Canadian SMEs, Ann’s concept provides clear guidance:

  • Consider promotional items as a strategy rather than an afterthought. “It’s not about finding a pen, it’s about finding the pen that boosts your brand equity,” she tells her clients.
  • Strike a balance between results and creativity. The best item is the one people remember, use, keep, and connect with your brand favourably.
  • Make an investment in connections. Long‑term supplier and client relationships are central to Innovatex’s ability to deliver on tough timelines and complex briefs.
  • Take the lead from the heart. Her “promotional products with heart” strategy demonstrates that it is possible to create a successful company while simultaneously supporting women, communities, and issues.
  • You’re going to spend a lot of time working, so always incorporate an element of enjoyment. It can be as simple as ‘Fun Fridays” (office coffees).
  • Find your signature. Something that sparks conversations.  For Ann it’s always been shoes.

Conclusion

Ann Baiden has shown how strategic, values-driven innovation can transform commonplace goods into potent brand storytellers. Her entrepreneurial spirit and keen business sense has taken her from a grass roots company to an award-winning, women-owned and run promotional products firm. Her leadership at Innovatex Solutions and her unceasing efforts to empower women and communities perfectly capture the essence of what CanadianSME’s Business Woman of the Month is intended to honour.
