Business Woman of the Month: Kiran Bains

Kiran Bains Helping Canadian Food Entrepreneurs Grow from Kitchen to Retail

Kiran Bains, MSc, RD, is a five-time founder, investor, and ecosystem builder known as one of Canada’s most effective advocates for food and beverage product. As Co-Founder and CEO of Food Venture Accelerator Inc. and Manager of the Western Accelerator at Ivey Business School’s Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship, she is at the intersection of product innovation, startup mentorship, and community, helping founders move from idea to retail shelf and hustle to scalable, strategic growth.

From Dietitian to Food Business Builder

Kiran’s business adventure stems from her experience as a Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist, where she witnessed how food influences health, culture, and community. Early in her career, she integrated clinical and community nutrition experience with positions in marketing, consumer insights, and product development, where she learned how taste, branding, and health claims affect what people buy.

She founded and scaled her own gluten-free food brand, getting experience in formulation, packaging, co-packing, distribution, and retail sales. Kiran collaborated with international food innovation and sustainability networks and non-profits, such as The SEED in Guelph, to develop a novel product manufactured from surplus produce, minimizing food waste and promoting the circular food economy, and Canadian Food Innovation Network where she helped develop a mentorship program for emerging graduates in the food industry.

Through these experiences, she gained a comprehensive understanding of the food system, including nutrition science, consumer psychology, supply chains, and sustainability. They also highlighted a common issue: entrepreneurs were enthusiastic and talented but lacked systematic, practical counsel on scaling.

Co‑Founding Food Venture Accelerator

In late 2019, Kiran met program strategist Sima Gandhi at an agri-food marketing event. Kiran provided valuable insights on turning recipes into cash. Sima, then at MaRS Discovery District, identified a need for a realistic system to help early-stage food businesses become retail-ready without wasting time and money.

The Food Venture Accelerator (FVA) was established in 2020 and has since expanded its program offerings to not only help food and beverage product startups, but those who are scaling national and international brands. Kiran co-founded and leads FVA, a platform that has helped over 1,500 entrepreneurs build and expand retail-ready CPG goods.

  • FVA offers a 12-week bootcamp to guide founders through compliance (CFIA/FDA), co-packing, costing, branding, and retail strategy amongst other programs for farmers and restaurant owners.
  • On-demand mini-courses, such as “Get Retail Ready” to help transform kitchen-tested recipes into shelf-ready products.
  • Customized programs, such as Restaurant to Retail, to help restaurant owners turn their recipes into shelf-stable products for grocery retail
  • Many of their programs have been run by Regional Innovation Centres, Small Business Centres, Universities and Colleges across North America

Kiran, a “food business development catalyst” provides founders with real solutions to avoid costly mistakes that can cost over $50,000. Her firm has assisted customers in securing co-packers within weeks, navigating regulatory challenges, and landing on shows such as Dragon’s Den and in regional and national grocery chains.

Western Accelerator and Its Approach to Sector Agnostic Venture Coaching

Beyond FVA, Kiran manages the Western Accelerator at the Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship (Ivey Business School at Western University), a four-month program for high-growth businesses in several areas. As Accelerator Manager, she

  • Advises innovators on go-to-market strategies, business models, operations, and sales.
  • Connects ventures with Western and Ivey alumni mentors and investors.
  • Funnels top ventures through Morrissette’s investment pipeline.
  • Improves community partnerships, including introducing Dragon’s Den auditions to the school.

Founders in the program receive workspace, coaching, and entrepreneurship instruction from Ivey academics, and a $12,000 grant. Kiran’s sector-agnostic approach enables her to apply lessons from food and CPG industries, such as customer discovery, rapid iteration, and channel strategy, to SaaS, social enterprise, and other early-stage businesses. Her overarching goal is straightforward: make the founder journey more strategic, systems-based, scalable, supported, and accessible, whether a founder is establishing a sauce line or a software platform.
