Complexe Desjardins Inaugurates A New Art Installation To Celebrate Its 5oth Anniversary

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Complexe Desjardins is proud to announce the opening of a brand new art installation created by Quebec artist Yann Pocreau.

The inauguration took place on the evening of October 22 in the presence of invited guests, at the Sainte-Catherine entrance, where the artwork was unveiled and is now permanently installed.

“We’re proud to mark the 50th anniversary of Complexe Desjardins by unveiling Systèmes d’écho. This artwork adds to the history of a building that has been part of Montrealers’ everyday lives for generations. It reflects our commitment to contributing to a vibrant and inspiring downtown where art, culture, business and people come together and give Montreal its vitality.”

– Denis Dubois, President and Chief Executive Officer of Desjardins Group

Designed specifically for Complexe Desjardins, Pocreau’s submission was selected following a request for proposals and a jury selection process. It takes the form of a hanging installation that pays tribute to this iconic downtown Montreal building. The hanging installation showcases the light and architecture of Complexe Desjardins. Designed to fit harmoniously into the vast central area, the artwork will play off the flow of visitors. Through its presence and scale, the installation transforms the perception of space by offering a visual experience that changes depending on where the viewer is standing. This inauguration officially marks the installation’s entry into the public landscape.

A vision focused on light

Yann Pocreau is a multidisciplinary Montreal-based artist who uses light as a central theme in his work. He uses photography, sculpture and installation to explore the narrative impact of light and showcase spaces in new ways.

“Complexe Desjardins embodies 50 years of history, culture and business. With Systèmes d’écho, I wanted to create a piece that reflects this energy and continues to evolve alongside the people who experience it. “It’s also a great honour for me to showcase this work at Complexe Desjardins, an iconic Montreal location and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and urban landscape,” emphasizes Yann Pocreau.

A flagship 50th anniversary initiative

By acquiring this work of art, Complexe Desjardins is making a lasting gesture to mark its 50th anniversary. It enhances visitors’ experience of the building and reaffirms its place in the heart of downtown Montreal. A true landmark in its environment, the work bears witness to the evolution of the Complexe and asserts its place as a vibrant forward-looking cultural space. The installation is open for public viewing.
