Drizzle Honey: Your Daily Dose Of Nectar

Small Business Canada

The story of Drizzle Honey began in 2014 when its founder, Aja Horsley, was working as an environmental scientist. During her scientific career, she worked in urban agriculture research and was assigned a rooftop beekeeping project for harvesting culinary honey.

Aja became obsessed with the process and became a backyard beekeeper, investing in hives, harvesting honey herself, pouring and packaging it in her kitchen, and selling it in the local market. Soon, she also quit her job to pursue this newfound passion.

But the story took a twist when, in 2016, Aja became allergic to bees after being stung too many times by them. Not ready to quit on her dreams, she turned to her network of beekeepers. She stopped pouring and packaging honey from her kitchen but remodeled the business structure of Drizzle by partnering with beekeepers who shared her love for bees and values in sustainability.

It was just the beginning of a lifelong love affair with bees.

Healthy Hives and Raw Honey

Aja Horsley is an environmental scientist-turned-entrepreneur who previously led beekeeping projects for SAIT’s culinary and research departments. Her love of honey bees, local agriculture, and natural, healthy products eventually led her to launch Drizzle Honey as a 100% pure, bee-friendly honey.

When she created her brand in 2015, Aja recognized the urgent need to support the Canadian honey industry. She became drawn to the luxurious colors, aromas, and flavors naturally occurring in high-quality honey.

Drizzle was born out of a desire to showcase the unique qualities of raw, unadulterated honey while ensuring the health of local bee populations and empowering sustainable production in beekeeping.

They keep their hives healthy and their honey raw, providing a feel-good factor about eating healthy pollen, enzymes, and minerals.

Drizzle Honey produces the nectar of health that is golden, creamy, and functional, brimming with nutrients and antioxidants. It is the healthiest honey, 100% pure and powered with superfoods, that you can have daily.

They ensure that their honey is good for you and the bees. It’s made 100% raw, with no heating or filtering to compromise nutrients. It is all-natural, with no added sugar, preservatives, artificial ingredients, GMOs, or other imported or unregulated ingredients.

Drizzle honey is Canadian-made and sustainably sourced brand that follows ethical business practices. In addition, it is allergen-free, with no major allergens like gluten and dairy.

Boasting of Color and Flavor

Drizzle honey nourishes your body. They use no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers on their honey fields and ensure their customers and the bees are safe from toxic by-products. Hence their honey is delivered in the most natural, nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich form that bees make.

Their honey is a treat for your tastebuds. Each variety boasts nuances in color and flavor. They also collaborate with a chef to infuse their honey with gourmet and nutrient-dense superfood ingredients described as culinary nectar.

Drizzle honey ensures that they save the bees by partnering with Canadian beekeepers. They protect bees by providing a safe habitat for them to build homes and feed on pollen- and nectar-rich food sources. In addition, they donate 1% of their profits to pollinator research and protection.

Drizzle Honey started as a rooftop beekeeping project for Aja, who turned Drizzle into a buzz-worthy lifestyle brand and the benchmark for sustainable beekeeping practices.

Standards Of Sustainability

Drizzle Honey ensures the highest sustainability standard and sets the standard for healthy honey and sustainable practices in beekeeping. They believe the word “sustainable” is used too liberally in business, and if it’s not addressing people, the planet, and profit, it’s just not sustainable.

They bring in these sustainable practices by ensuring a secure habitat for the bees. They provide a safe habitat for bees in the quietude of Alberta in the northern wildflower fields, where bees can build homes and feed on various pollen and nectar-rich food sources.

They partner with local beekeepers to control the quality and safety of the honey and reduce the carbon footprint by not importing honey. In addition, they keep the health of the bees in check by providing them with a bio-diverse food source that is nutrient-dense and unadulterated wildflowers.

They donate 1 percent of their profit to the Pollinator Partnership. They also participate in Pollinator Week annually to educate customers and their teams on the importance of pollinators and bees.

B Corporation is the certifying body and gold standard for sustainability in business, assessing all aspects of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Drizzle Honey became a certified B Corp in 2019 by passing the rigorous certification process.

In addition, they are proud and certified women-owned and operated businesses. Under the leadership of Aja Horsley, the CEO and Queen Bee at Drizzle Honey, the company has attained much glory. This includes the Globe and Mail Report on Business magazine’s Changemakers Award and Startup Canada’s Social Enterprise of the Year Award, the Prairies Region.

Drizzle received a selection for District Ventures’ participation in November 2016 and February 2018. District Ventures is a startup accelerator focused on the consumer packaged goods industry.
