In an inspiring interview with CanadianSME Small Business Magazine, Carolyn Chen, founder of Dandylion, shares the heartfelt story behind her pet care brand, which originated from her 13-year-old Cockapoo Mocha’s battle with chronic skin issues. Driven by her personal mission to create gentle, effective grooming solutions for sensitive-skinned dogs, Carolyn has grown Dandylion from her parents’ basement to a widely recognized national brand. With her dedication to using safe, innovative ingredients, Carolyn has not only reshaped the pet care industry but also built a strong, engaged community of pet owners on platforms like TikTok. In this conversation, Carolyn discusses Dandylion’s journey, the impact of community support, and her vision for future growth, offering invaluable insights for aspiring Canadian entrepreneurs.

Carolyn Chen is the founder of Dandylion, a dog care brand inspired by her 13-year-old cockapoo’s chronic skin issues. Dandylion is disrupting the dog grooming industry with innovative and cleaner dog grooming essentials. Her team has grown and moved from packing orders in her parents’ basement to having her own office, now bringing in thousands of products at a time. On TikTok, Carolyn shares her journey, inspiring others to create opportunities and push for a better future for our animals.

Can you share the inspiration behind Dandylion and what motivated you to create dog grooming products specifically for sensitive skin?

The inspiration for Dandylion started with my own dog, Mocha. For years, she battled itchy skin and constant irritations, and I struggled to find gentle, effective products that truly helped. I soon realized Mocha’s issues were far from unique—itchy skin is one of the most common reasons dogs visit the vet. With my background in beauty and skincare, I knew I could create something better. I envisioned products as safe, high-quality, and thoughtfully formulated as those we trust for ourselves, specifically designed for dogs with sensitive skin.

Dandylion grew from that vision. We’re passionate about avoiding ingredients often found in pet products, like sulfates, drying alcohols, artificial fragrances, dyes, and essential oils, to create gentle, reliable care for dogs. We also prioritize innovative, first-to-market formats that make grooming easier for pet parents, making it simple to integrate regular grooming routines at home. We believe that building these habits not only strengthens the bond between pet and owner but also contributes to long-term health for our dogs. Today, Dandylion is more than a brand; it’s a community of pet parents who want the best for their dogs. It’s incredible to look back and see how far we’ve come—all because one little dog needed something better.

What were some pivotal moments or milestones that have shaped Dandylion’s growth and journey as a brand in the dog care industry?

A key milestone for us was the launch of our innovative Clean Paws, a no-rinse paw cleanser with a built-in brush. This product struck a chord with dog parents, who appreciated the ease and effectiveness it brought to daily paw cleaning. The success of Clean Paws helped refine our product development strategy, solidifying our commitment to creating innovative formats that make regular grooming easier for pet owners.

Another pivotal moment in Dandylion’s journey came in August 2022, when we went viral on TikTok. For three months, we posted consistently—two to three times a day—experimenting, sharing our story, and connecting with our audience. Then, one video took off, and we sold out of all our inventory almost overnight. Up until then, we had been manufacturing everything out of my parents’ basement, but going viral enabled us to reinvest in the business and partner with contract manufacturers, allowing us to scale our operations significantly.

Today, Dandylion products are available in over 500 retail stores, allowing us to fulfill our mission on a larger scale—providing irritant-free, innovative grooming solutions for sensitive-skinned dogs everywhere.

How has building a community on TikTok impacted your business growth, and what strategies have been most effective in engaging with Canadian pet owners?

Building a community on TikTok has been instrumental in Dandylion’s growth. Sharing our story and inviting people behind the scenes to witness the journey of building Dandylion has been highly effective in engaging Canadian pet owners. Storytelling has allowed us to foster a genuine connection with our audience, turning online interactions into real-life experiences. This was especially evident during our Dandylion pop-up events, where hundreds of dog parents showed up, some even lining up two hours before the start. TikTok has been more than a platform for us; it’s a way to build a loyal, engaged community that believes in our mission.

What has your experience been like participating in the TikTok SmallBiz Pop-Up, and what do you hope to achieve through this initiative?

The TikTok SmallBiz Pop-Up has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase Dandylion and interact with our community in person. This experience has allowed us to meet customers, share our story, and receive direct feedback, which is invaluable for any growing business. Through this initiative, we hope to increase brand awareness and inspire other small businesses to leverage social platforms to connect with their audiences. The experience has highlighted the power of community and the positive impact of small businesses on local markets.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for Dandylion, and what message would you like to share with other Canadian entrepreneurs inspired by your journey?

Looking forward, our goals include expanding our product line, reaching new markets, and continuing to innovate within the pet care space. We hope to set an example of what’s possible when passion meets purpose. For Canadian entrepreneurs, my message is to stay resilient and true to your vision. Building a business comes with challenges, but with persistence and a focus on community, it’s possible to create something meaningful. Embrace your journey, celebrate every milestone, and never underestimate the impact of authenticity and a strong mission.
