When Carl Heinrichs (a self-taught furniture designer) set out to disrupt the bed industry they set the bar high.
Having gone through the agonising process of assembling beds with bags of hardware and complicated assembly instructions they knew there was lots of room for improvement. “We wanted to create beds that are fun and playful to assemble. People don’t have the time and are tired of complicated and time consuming assembly work”, says Carl.
By eliminating all hardware and interlocking the individual wood pieces a strong frame is created. “Wood joints have been used for centuries and hold better than any hardware,” says Carl. Another benefit of using no hardware is the elimination of squeaking. Squeaking usually occurs if the hardware becomes loose over time and rubs against the wood. The slightest move will cause squeaking and will deprive you of any sleep. “To make sure our beds would not squeak we tested them at home for several months”, says Carl.
Their beds are not only easy to assemble but also expandable. “This was a real challenge to incorporate the expandability into a bed frame without any hardware”, says Carl. The No-Fuss Plus bed does just that. By simply sliding the bases to the desired size. “Super easy to expand and can be a lot of fun. When customers decide to up or downgrade they don’t need to go out and buy another frame. This saves time and money and greatly reduces waste in our landfills. We have only one earth so let’s be conscious of how we treat our environment”, says Carl.
All of their bed frames are low profile meaning they can be used for small spaces such as lofts, where headroom is at a premium. The plywood slats are spaced out at under 3 inches which is a requirement for most mattress manufacturers. No need for a box spring as the mattress sits directly on the plywood slats.
The beds are made out of Maple plywood harvested in Quebec and are FSC Certified. This means that the wood is harvested from a sustainably managed forest. “Due to the climate and soil Quebec is known for superior Birch and Maple wood”, says Carl.
Since the start of the pandemic many overseas manufacturers have been considering manufacturing in their home country. For good reason, as supply chain issues, shipping delays have impacted the pricing of their products. Not to mention the inconvenience of waiting for your order to arrive due to long delays. “The silver lining of this pandemic is that manufacturers of certain industries are considering setting up shop at home again. This will create jobs and strengthen our economy”, says Carl.
Carl decided to rebrand their name and added Maple as well as Mahogany to the selection. “It was time to do a face lift”, says Carl.
For the last three years Quagga has seen sales double every year and they predict this will hold true for the foreseeable future.
