Kayla, you’re a strong advocate for journaling as a tool for personal development. Could you share how journaling has influenced your professional life and any tips for someone looking to start this practice to enhance their own career growth?

There are no limits with journaling and this understanding is a basis for why I am such a strong advocate. I used to be extremely resistant to the idea because I did not believe in the impact just writing my thoughts down could have. I was only assuming out of my own fear of facing my thoughts and I was so wrong about how life-changing the practice could be.

Professionally, I processed challenges, manifested success, set goals, found clarity in direction, developed new ideas and practiced gratitude all in the pages of my journal. Written vulnerably down in the pages of a very special notebook, any success, breakthrough, and challenge overcame unfolded first in my writing. Journaling has and continues to be my go-to practice for personal and professional development.

For anyone who is looking to start journaling, just get started. Just start writing and I always say, “be vulnerable with the pages.” Be honest with how you feel, where you’re at, what you want and why.

In your journey, setbacks have played a crucial role in shaping your resilience. Can you share a pivotal setback in your career and how it inspired your approach to overcoming challenges?

When I first started my career in real estate with the land development company I currently work for I made A LOT of mistakes, and these almost cost me my job. These mistakes were a massive setback because not only was I rookie, on a high-performing, male-dominated sales team with a lot of respect to earn I was one mistake about from receiving the boot. What I would consider my final warning was my wake-up call. I committed wholeheartedly to the job, set high goals and expectations for myself, and became obsessed with achieving them.

This setback played a crucial role in shaping my resilience because I was at rock bottom with a company I had great potential for financial success with and if I did not perform I would be fired. The following year, and first full year as a rookie, I won the Top Sales Producer Award. I did not let the setback keep me in a negative headspace, I made the comeback, and I made it a big one.

You emphasize the importance of embracing ‘the 3 F’s’ in your career—’F#%k up, Fail, and Figure it out.’ Can you explain how this philosophy has helped you navigate your professional life and provide an example of how you applied it?

The story above is one great example of how I’ve applied this, and I think the overall philosophy of it is what is important. None of us want to f#%k up but we have to be mentally prepared for it and truly see failure as an opportunity. You have to get comfortable and accustomed to the word “no” to really be able to move on to the figure it out phase. Rather than seeing f#%k ups as a roadblock, understand they are only speed bumps along the way to figuring it out.

As the founder of Move Into Words, what impact do you hope to achieve through your advocacy for mental and physical health habits?

Our equation is your environment + your habits = your output and really we are committed to creating a strong community of growth minded individuals and providing resources for each individual to feel supported on their own journeys of being and becoming the best version of themselves. We recognize overall wellness is not a one size fits all equation, but movement, environment, healthy habits, self-awareness, and accountability are all key factors to achieving it.

With the upcoming launch of your book, Always Squeezing Lemons, what are the key takeaways you hope readers will gain about redefining success and taking responsibility for their personal and professional lives?

One main takeaway is we all get to design our own destinies. Success is subjective because it is up to us to define what it really looks like and means to us. This requires us to be honest with ourselves and have self-awareness. It also may lead to disappointing others or not checking of the standard boxes for society’s approval but understanding and accepting this ok. It is necessary to be selfish before you can selfless, disappoint everyone before you disappoint yourself and understand which boxes you need to check for yourself. When we realize we can be the cause, problem, and solution for everything in our lives, our worlds can change. I hope readers are able to fully grasp this through my book.
