Scoria strives to reconnect with lost creativity as if you were children again and enhance mental and physical well-being. They create products encouraging grown-ups to embrace a youthful mindset, such as playfulness, imagination, and storytelling.
Realizing The Pressure
At the age of 18, Yara Kamal realized that she had lost her sense of playfulness and creativity due to the fear of judgment and the indirect societal pressures of having to behave a certain way.
Yara began researching ways to reconnect again with childlike behaviors like being playful, having an active imagination, and appreciating storytelling as a grown-up. On this journey, she was inspired to create an eco-conscious yoga mat that would encourage others through brand messaging and artwork to spark their inner child, who we are at the core.
Yara felt her mental health and well-being drastically improved after reconnecting with these habits. Hence, in 2017, Yara founded Scoria to unleash the child within.
Since its inception, Scoria has aimed to create goods that encourage wellness practices that inspire creativity and self-expression, regardless of age. They believe that expression through play can empower humans by helping them discover new perspectives, improve the retention of information in education, improve long-term happiness, boost creativity, and navigate challenging life situations.
Through Scoria, Yara is dedicated to sharing a unique perspective on wellness and strives to create a space where others can fearlessly be themselves and unleash the child within. Since launching, they have sold over 10,000 cork yoga mats and accessories, grown into a team of five women, and created a diverse, welcoming community.
Bringing A Change
Scoria believes in celebrating being human, allowing space for natural expression, and celebrating our quirks. They also believe in being kind, not just to others but to the earth as well. Sustainability is at the core of everything they do; they create mostly natural products that are safe for the planet. They ensure their products are biodegradable and recyclable and focus on minimal use of energy and waste.
They strive to offer environmentally sustainable yoga equipment that rewilds the inner child and inspires the imagination while focusing on quality and contributing to an inclusive and better world.
Scoria’s goal is to make an impact every time a customer makes a purchase. In the first four years, they have raised and donated more than 150,000 nutritious meals to those in need. In addition, they have impacted hungry communities worldwide through their previous charity partner, Feeding Children Everywhere.
Today, they have shifted their cause to supporting life skills and healthy living education for Indigenous youth in Canada while using play-based tools in partnership with Right To Play. Right To Play is an organization dedicated to donating a portion of proceeds to safe education for Indigenous youth.
With every purchase, they donate proceeds to Right To Play’s Promoting Life-Skills In Aboriginal Youth (PLAY) program. They believe in supporting local and Indigenous communities, especially youth and the next generation. This empowers children in their day-to-day lives, teaches life skills and career education through play, and provides access to a community that celebrates diversity and their Indigenous roots.
Scoria empowers through play and aids in rediscovering who we were before the world told us who to be. For more information, visit their website at https://www.scoriaworld.com/.
