Running a small business means carrying a lot—responsibility, uncertainty, and constant decisions resting on your shoulders. In my role at FreshBooks, I work alongside small business owners around the world. Many of them are women building service-based businesses. And I see firsthand the resilience and creativity it takes to build something of your own.
I know that experience personally. Earlier in my career, I co-founded a maternity-focused business with friends. I’ve been the operator, making trade-offs, learning on the fly, and relying on the generosity of mentors. That perspective continues to shape how I think about the role of community in building something meaningful.
Small business owners aren’t just looking for tools. They’re looking for clarity and the gift of time. When technology does its job well, it creates space for people to focus on their craft, their customers, and their growth.
To me, Give to Gain lives in the intentional support women offer one another—sharing knowledge, opening doors, and mentoring the next generation. When we lift each other up, our collective success grows.
To every woman building something of her own: Keep going. And when you can, reach back and support someone else. That is how real progress happens.
