Stop Trying to Sound Like a Big Brand!

That’s Why You’re Losing.

There’s a moment I secretly love, and it happens with almost every new small business client we take on at Tribe and Tales. They send us their website copy, and it reads like a Deloitte press release wrote a love letter to a McKinsey deck. “We deliver end-to-end solutions.” “Our synergistic approach.” “Cultivating stakeholder ecosystems.”

I want to send them a bill for translation costs alone.

For over a decade, I’ve watched small brands try to sound like big ones, and I have never seen it work. Not once. The Canadian coffee roaster writes like Nestlé. The Toronto boutique writes like Aritzia’s understudy. The Brampton salon writes like L’Oréal wrote it in French, ran it through corporate English, and forgot which country it was landing in.

Somewhere along the way, we all decided that credibility means sounding like a company that owns a lobby.

Here’s the truth almost nobody in Canadian small business marketing wants to hear. Your marketing isn’t underperforming because of your budget. It’s underperforming because of your voice. And you’ve swapped it, deliberately and expensively, for someone else’s.

Big brands don’t sound big because they’re big. They sound generic because they have to. You can’t say anything distinctive when you sell to everyone. That’s the tax they pay for scale. You don’t have that tax. You have a founder with an opinion, a tiny team that can reply to a bad Google review in twenty minutes, and a story Nestlé would quietly kill to have and can’t buy.
