A Canadian Legacy in Hand-Blown Glass: Glass Roots

Blown glass is unquestionably beautiful, as is every other handcrafted product. Glass Roots Canada is a paragon of craftsmanship and dedication in Saint John, New Brunswick’s old uptown section. Curtis Dionne started the course because he was committed to glassblowing while perfecting his craft at the internationally known Glass City of Guadalajara. After learning from professionals in the field, Curtis moved to rural New Brunswick in 2008 and founded Glass Roots Inc. on a rustic farmhouse furnished with a wood-fired furnace evocative of the 14th century.

Moving their family to Saint John in 2021, Curtis and his girlfriend Charlotte MacLeod had the idea of establishing a public glass workshop. Industrial zoning issues postponed their original intention to relocate the studio to Union Street, but they still had to do so. Instead, it set the stage for how they may improve and extend their facility.

The business exploded when Glass Roots moved into a long-boarded-up structure next door in January 2023. With the addition of a viewing room, the facility can now be used as a fully functional studio, where visitors can see the fascinating and delicate process of glassblowing up close.

A watershed moment came for Glass Roots in July 2024 when it combined its gallery with the bigger studio at 87 Canterbury Street, a prime location at the crossroads of Canterbury and Duke Streets. Locals and visitors alike are invited to marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of hand-blown glass at this great location, which is only two blocks away from the acclaimed Area 506 Container Village and the cruise ship pier. The new gallery and studio in Saint John’s uptown quarter display Curtis’s extraordinary workmanship and expose the art of glassblowing to a broader audience. It also serves as a bustling cultural centre.

While paying homage to glassblowing’s rich heritage, the dynamic and cutting-edge Glass Roots Canada is a flourishing innovation hub. Check out https://glassrootsstudio.com/ to see all the different goods they have.
