As Canadians grow more concerned about what’s in their daily beverages and the environmental impact of their purchases, Lemon Lily Tea offers a solution that blends quality, natural ingredients, and sustainability. Founded in 2012 in Toronto, this family-owned Canadian tea company has built its reputation on handcrafted loose-leaf teas, inventive flavour combinations, and a commitment to responsible sourcing. Lemon Lily, with over 200 tea kinds and a growing presence in Canada and the United States, shows how a desire to make better choices can build a successful Canadian business.

A Canadian Tea Company Built on Passion and Purpose

Entrepreneur Jason Johnston launched Lemon Lily Tea in 2012 after seeing an opportunity to make tea products without artificial flavourings or unnecessary additives. Inspired by his tea experiences and growing interest in natural ingredients, Johnston spent significant time researching tea estates, ingredient sources, and blending methods before creating the company’s line. His vision was straightforward. Tea should taste great while retaining the natural properties of its ingredients.

Lemon Lily prioritized ingredient quality, transparency, and unique flavour characteristics over competing on price. This attitude became the cornerstone of a company that now sells hundreds of tea blends made from ingredients sourced worldwide. Johnston’s entrepreneurial career exemplifies the commitment required to establish an independent Canadian food and beverage brand. In his published anniversary thoughts, he recalled the company’s early financial challenges and uncertainty, highlighting the value of tenacity, family support, and customer loyalty.

More Than 200 Tea Varieties for Every Preference

One of Lemon Lily’s distinguishing features is the breadth of its product line. The company sells over 200 teas and herbal infusions, appealing to both traditional mixes and those looking to try new flavours. Its offerings include traditional black teas, green teas, herbal infusions, fruit teas, matcha, and naturally caffeine-free choices. Lemon Lily also provides superfood powders, hot chocolate, and customized beverage mixes. Its unique offerings include Canadian Maple Earl Grey, Unicorn Sparkles, and Reishi Hot Chocolate. These items demonstrate the brand’s interest in blending recognizable components with unique flavour combinations.

For consumers who like classic tea experiences, the company also provides Japanese Hojicha, Earl Grey, and English Breakfast. Lemon Lily’s teas are handcrafted and brewed fresh to order in its Toronto facility, ensuring product freshness and quality.

Natural Ingredients and a Commitment to Quality

Lemon Lily’s product philosophy focuses on natural ingredients while avoiding artificial flavours, colours, and genetically modified ingredients. The brand says its teas are gluten-free, nut-free, and vegan, with ingredients sourced from organic tea plantations and farms. Instead of synthetic flavourings, the blends use fruits, herbs, spices, natural extracts, and plant-derived oils. A key distinction involves organic certification. Lemon Lily previously held organic certification from 2013 to 2021, but elected not to renew it. According to its official FAQ, the company continues to source from certified organic farms despite no longer holding company-level accreditation.

This strategy represents the brand’s commitment to ingredient sourcing and product transparency. It also emphasizes the need to distinguish between items made with organically sourced ingredients and those with active organic certification.

Advancing Sustainability Through Measurable Environmental Initiatives

Environmental responsibility is another key aspect of Lemon Lily’s business. The corporation has implemented measures to reduce carbon emissions, packaging waste, and energy use, and to manage resources responsibly. Lemon Lily announced a partnership with Greenspark, an environmental impact platform, in May 2024. Under the agreement, the corporation agreed to fund carbon removal, tree planting, ocean kelp restoration, and plastic recovery efforts in response to consumer orders. Lemon Lily announced several environmental goals in its March 2025 sustainability statement.

Company-reported environmental impact figures published in March 2025:

  • 36 tonnes of carbon removal funded
  • 4,000 Trees planted
  • 400 Ocean kelp plants supported
  • 11,000+ Plastic bottles recovered

The company also claims it recycles 99% of its operating waste and reuses roughly 95% of inbound shipment boxes for wholesale deliveries. Although Lemon Lily touts its overall goal of becoming climate-positive, its March 2025 report explicitly said the business has achieved carbon neutrality through environmental activities. These environmental claims are self-reported, not independently validated, measurements of the company’s total operational footprint. Together, these efforts show how Canadian small businesses can incorporate environmental concerns into their daily operations and customer interactions.

Expanding Across Canada and the United States

Since its inception in 2012, Lemon Lily Tea has grown beyond its Toronto roots, establishing partnerships with retailers, cafés, restaurants, spas, and other hospitality enterprises. According to the company’s official website, it sells its teas and superfood powders at over 900 locations in Canada and the United States. Lemon Lily also offers wholesale services, private-label products, and custom tea blends for businesses looking to add natural teas to their offerings. These services enable independent merchants, restaurants, and wellness enterprises to offer specialty tea items to their customers. This growth highlights opportunities for Canadian businesses that combine product differentiation with a strong commitment to quality and customer service.

Celebrating 14 Years of Tea Innovation and Recognition

Lemon Lily will celebrate its 14th year in business in 2026, marking the transition from an entrepreneurial idea to a well-established Canadian tea brand. The company’s official website emphasizes its history of industry acclaim, noting that newspapers, associations, and festivals have honoured its teas for more than a decade. Lemon Lily also claims an average customer rating of 4.9 stars from over 4,000 customers. Its current product lines reflect ongoing innovation, with featured collections including ceremonial matcha, micro-ground powders, quick beverage blends, and seasonal autumn teas.

The brand has also received media attention. Its official wholesale website includes appearances and features on Breakfast Television, The Marilyn Denis Show, CTV Morning Live, Toronto Life, Canadian Living, and Today’s Parent. While these accolades reflect the company’s existing presence, we could not reliably validate any newly bestowed honours for 2025 or 2026.

Bringing People Together One Cup at a Time

Beyond its expanding product variety and sustainability efforts, Lemon Lily Tea shows how modest daily routines can shape important moments. Whether enjoyed as part of a morning routine, shared during a discussion, or served in a café, tea offers a chance to unwind and connect. Lemon Lily encourages people to evaluate the quality and origins of the products they consume by using natural ingredients, creative blends, and responsible business practices. For Canadian entrepreneurs, the company’s journey exemplifies how an independent corporation may pursue economic success while upholding its original principles and environmental responsibilities.
