Charkole Designs is the passion project of Canadian artist Charlene Kolesnik, also known simply as “Char.” Char was initially schooled in journalism and then spent years working in graphic and media design (including for a major publishing firm in Calgary), before becoming increasingly drawn to painting. Living in a place she affectionately refers to as her “Cabin in the Woods,” surrounded by nature, she began painting to convey her emotional and aesthetic responses to the surroundings she adored. Charkole Designs started as a personal creative outlet and has since grown into a full-fledged art studio and online gallery.
A Distinct Artistic Vision
Char’s work is sometimes described as a “kaleidoscope”: vibrant, expressive, and alive with colours that appear to glow. Her paintings are inspired by the spectacular backdrop of Alberta’s Rockies, Calgary’s foothills, neighbouring woodlands, and the paths she visits on her many bike rides.
Char has an internal ritual before commencing a painting: she writes positive affirmations on a blank canvas with light acrylic, laying the groundwork for optimism, intention, and energy. Then she let the brushes and colours flow. The ultimate effect is landscapes and abstractions that go beyond mere representation to become emotional experiences – settings filled with light, warmth, and genuine optimism.
Her use of oil and acrylic paints on wrapped or unstretched canvas, along with her decision to create one-of-a-kind originals, contributes to her distinctiveness. As the studio claims, “No two original works can ever be reproduced,” making each piece a unique treasure endowed with character.
Recent Exhibitions & Commissions
In February 2025, Charkole Designs released “Wildflower Extravaganza,” a 24×36″ acrylic painting from a gallery of original fine art that is now sold. The studio continues to accept limited custom projects, allowing clients to collaborate on personalized artworks such as landscapes, abstract compositions, and pet portraits.
