Pottery has a long and storied history, with records dating back thousands of years; this vocation always connects us to our roots. Pottery has a long and storied history, with records dating back to 29,000 BC. Kym McWhirter is a talented artisan potter who is genuinely devoted to making beautiful and functional pieces of art. She lives in the picturesque seaside village of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia, which is why handmade pottery is still popular among us. In 2002, she began her exploration into pottery in Moncton, New Brunswick, where she lived, by enrolling in a wheel-throwing class.
Over time, what started out as a harmless fascination became a complete fixation. Kym dedicated herself to honing her craft through consistent practice and experimentation, investing in her own wheel and kiln and setting up her first studio in her basement. She spent six years perfecting her skills through self-study, and her items began to sell well at local gift shops and find their way into the homes of friends and family.
Kym took a break from pottery in 2008 to focus on her family and career as a graphic designer. However, fate had different plans. Ten years later, in the midst of a career transition and an unoccupied home, she seized the opportunity to pursue her true ardour: pottery. She began her pottery career as a full-time employee with unwavering dedication, embracing the challenges and rewards of the craft with renewed enthusiasm. A new chapter began in her life and career in 2019 when she and her companion Andy acquired an old general store in Centreville, a picturesque settlement on Digby Neck.
Her handcrafted earthenware transcends being a mere commercial enterprise; it serves as a means of life, a labour of affection that fosters her connection to the local community and environment. Kym’s skill, ingenuity, and profound admiration for the splendour of nature are harmoniously incorporated into each piece of art she produces. Kym Pottery personifies unwavering commitment and fervour towards her artistic endeavours as she laboriously moulds clay into timeless masterpieces.
