Ferreol, founded in Quebec in 2019, is a Canadian alpine ski company that prioritizes engineering, performance, local manufacture, and environmental sustainability. Jonathan Audet, Félix Lapointe, and Étienne Boucher formed the company while studying mechanical engineering at Université Laval. Ferreol was founded on a shared enthusiasm for skiing and the belief that skis on the market required too many sacrifices. The founders aimed to build products that better blend performance, adaptability, skier experience, and environmental responsibility.

From Université Laval to a Quebec Ski Brand

Ferreol began when its three founders were studying mechanical engineering at Université Laval. Jonathan, Félix, and Étienne all had technical backgrounds and a strong interest in skiing. According to the firm, existing ski products did not meet their expectations for the sport, especially in terms of environmental impact, adaptability, and the relationship between product designers and skiers. In 2019, the company began in a garage before expanding to an innovation lab at the foot of Mont Sainte Anne. Today, Ferreol designs, prototypes, and tests its skis in Quebec before producing them in Rimouski.

Engineering Performance Into Every Ski

Engineering is still important to Ferreol’s product development. The company measures and tests camber, stiffness, geometry, and materials in its R&D facility. Its goal is to create high-performance all-mountain skis that are adaptable to diverse terrain and snow conditions.

Ferreol also creates patented material technology. Scalium®, an aluminum-scandium alloy, serves as a structural reinforcement or mounting plate in several of the company’s skis. This emphasis on research and prototyping reflects the founders’ engineering backgrounds and their decision to approach ski design through testing rather than tradition alone.

Designed and Made in Canada

Ferreol’s business approach strongly emphasizes local production. The company conceives the skis in its innovation lab at Mont Sainte Anne and manufactures them in Rimouski, Quebec. The company claims its manufacturing uses pure hydroelectric energy, and the poplar and maple used in its ski cores come from woods within 100 kilometres of the factory. Ferreol touts its skis as 100% created and manufactured in Canada, emphasizing the company’s commitment to Quebec engineering and domestic manufacturing.

Rethinking Sustainability in Ski Manufacturing

Since its inception, Ferreol has prioritized environmental responsibility. The company replaces some synthetic components with natural flax fibres, combines locally sourced wood, manufactures using hydroelectricity, and claims to be carbon neutral since 2022. Ferreol also says it is working on developing entirely recyclable skis. For a product so closely linked to mountains and winter conditions, the company’s sustainability strategy shows a desire to reduce manufacturing impacts on the landscapes that enable the activity.

Building an Independent Canadian Ski Brand

Ferreol’s success shows how specialist engineering expertise can become a consumer brand. To improve its goods, the company uses technological research, local manufacturing, material innovation, and direct skier feedback. Instead of splitting design, testing, and production across disparate markets, the company’s founders kept them close together. That strategy sets Ferreol apart in Canada’s outdoor market, where product performance and environmental factors increasingly shape purchasing decisions.

Inspired by the Mountains

Skiing means more to Ferreol than recreation. It is central to the company’s product philosophy and a constant source of inspiration. From its research laboratory in Mont Sainte Anne to its manufacturing facility in Rimouski, the firm has centred its operations on producing skis for real-world conditions while protecting the natural environment. Ferreol represents a Quebec entrepreneurial story built on engineering, independence, craftsmanship, and a commitment to improving ski design and production.
