From YouTube University to the App Store: How Mick Brown Built HeyUp With AI

In this exclusive CanadianSME Small Business Magazine interview, Michael “Mick” O’Neil Brown, Founder of HeyUp: Daily Movement Breaks, shares how he turned an idea into an iPhone app at 62 despite having no software-development background. A lifelong learner and entrepreneur, Mick has built a diverse career spanning telecommunications, real estate, and business.

Using AI tools such as Claude and Codex, Mick developed HeyUp, a bodyweight-based app that helps adults stay active at home without a gym or equipment. His journey demonstrates how AI is empowering everyday entrepreneurs to turn ideas into products and embrace the new era of the solopreneur.

At 62, what made you believe you could build an iPhone app despite having no software-development background?

I like to try and keep abreast of technology as much as I can. I subscribe to newsletters and YouTube podcasts. I tried about a year ago to build a similar app which I abandoned due to cost knowing at some point I would need to hire a developer. The rapid advancement of AI has since changed the landscape.

How did tools like Claude and Codex help turn HeyUp from an idea into a real product?

Without these AI Tools it would have been impossible considering I know nothing about coding. I’m just getting started as there are daily updates now in this space and I have AI Agents to assist with everything. Codex is my go to for most things including wherein I have a full AI Team of Agents.

Why do you believe AI is opening app and SaaS creation to people outside the tech industry?

The playing field has been levelled considerably. No experience is necessary when any LLM can direct, assist or actually ‘do’ what needs to be done. I have 4 Agents running at the same time doing tasks within my HeyUp project from outreach to Marketing, Social media and Support. One person can do the job of many. This is the era of the Solopreneur.

What problem does HeyUp solve for adults who want to stay active without relying on a gym?

We lose muscle from 30+ but even more rapidly as we approach 50 and 60. Add to that the sedentary lifestyle, lack of time. We are not working out although the intent is there. HeyUp offers no gym, no weights. Hence no excuses. Workout from home using your bodyweight for all fitness levels. The App reminds, counts and tracks your progress as you become stronger enabling mobility and independence in later life.

What would you say to someone who feels they are too old—or too inexperienced—to build with AI?

There is no lid to our capabilities. The AI wave is here to ride for everyone and now even more-so. There is a unique idea in everyone of us. The world is changing daily so don’t get left behind.
