For athletes, nutrition is frequently a practical question. Can food provide energy when needed without hindering training or competition? GRYND, a Canadian sports nutrition firm, is based on a simple idea: create performance fuel with easily identifiable ingredients, such as Canadian maple syrup, and in formats tailored for real-world training. GRYND is a family-owned and operated business with locations in Calgary, Alberta and West Kelowna, British Columbia. The company manufactures sports nutrition products in Canada for runners, cyclists, hockey players, endurance athletes, and everyday active consumers who want accessible alternatives to highly processed performance foods.

Built by Athletes Looking for Better Fuel

GRYND says the company grew out of firsthand involvement in competitive sports. Its team grew up playing sports such as hockey, running, cycling, and baseball, and they knew the frustration of performance nutrition products that either didn’t taste good, were hard to tolerate during exercise, or failed to deliver the desired experience during demanding sessions. Instead of accepting these limits, the team started inventing its own approach to sports nutrition. The result was GRYND, a brand centred on what it defines as clean Canadian fuel, made with ingredients consumers can recognize.

Putting Canadian Maple Syrup at the Centre

Canadian maple syrup is a distinctive feature of GRYND’s product identity. Its organic energy waffles use Canadian maple syrup as a portable carbohydrate source for training, racing, games, and other strenuous activities. Rather than constructing another standard sports bar, GRYND was inspired by the thin stroopwafel style. A Dutch family in Norwich, Ontario, makes the company’s waffles from a traditional stroopwafel recipe passed down through generations. GRYND blends the standard formula with Canadian maple syrup and organic ingredients to create a uniquely Canadian endurance fuel.

Five Flavours for Different Training Days

GRYND’s energy waffle line now includes five maple-inspired flavours. The current product line includes Maple Sea Salt, Maple Saskatoon Berry, Maple Chocolate Strawberry, Maple Raspberry, and Maple Apple Fritter. The Maple Raspberry and Maple Apple Fritter variants are certified gluten-free. Each waffle is individually wrapped and designed to fit easily in running vests, cycling jerseys, gym bags, and other gear athletes use while exercising. Standard waffles contain roughly 20 grams of carbohydrates, making them an ideal portable source of nutrition before or during extended workouts.

A Focus on Recognizable Ingredients

One of GRYND’s key brand statements is ingredient simplicity. Its energy waffles use organic ingredients and contain no artificial sweeteners. Ingredient lists vary by flavour, but the original waffles include organic brown rice syrup, organic sugar, organic maple syrup, organic wheat flour, organic palm oil, organic soy flour, sea salt, organic rice extract, natural maple flavour, soy lecithin, and baking soda. The brand promotes this real-food approach as an alternative for athletes who want to avoid traditional gels, chews, and highly processed sports snacks. Rather than focusing solely on laboratory-style concoctions, GRYND aims to show that familiar foods can also fit into an athlete’s training program.

Going Beyond the Energy Waffle

GRYND is already moving beyond the product that helped build the brand. Its second major product category is Natural Endurance Butter, made with peanuts, honey, chocolate, and MCT oil. The product is offered in 32-gram single-serve containers and 125-gram resealable pouches, and it is marketed as a denser calorie source for long workouts and endurance sports. GRYND also sells bundles that combine waffles and Endurance Butter, giving athletes multiple fueling options based on the time and demands of their exercise.

A Maple Energy Gel Is Coming Next

The company’s next planned expansion takes its Canadian ingredient philosophy into one of sports nutrition’s most important sectors. GRYND says it’s creating a maple syrup-based energy gel with Canadian components. The planned product aims to offer a more natural alternative to typical sports gels. It is part of the company’s broader strategy to develop products for various stages of an athlete’s routine. The company’s future aspirations include goods for before, during, and after activity, as well as potential categories including trail nibbles, protein, and hydration. That direction shows that GRYND is aiming to become more than a single-product snack firm, instead establishing a larger Canadian sports nutrition platform.

Growing to More Than 150 Canadian Retailers

GRYND’s retail footprint has grown significantly since the company’s inception. According to the brand, its items are currently available at over 150 retailers across Canada, including specialty stores, hockey retailers, and other sporting-goods businesses. That physical retail presence is especially crucial in sports nutrition, as players frequently find items through races, training communities, athletic retailers, teammates, and coaches rather than traditional grocery stores. GRYND also sells directly to customers via its Canadian e-commerce website.

Fuelled by More Than 50,000 Athletes

Another significant milestone is the company’s expanding athlete base. GRYND claims that over 50,000 Canadian athletes have utilized its goods for training and competition in the brand’s first two years. Its audience is diverse, including runners, cyclists, hockey players, and endurance athletes. The brand also collaborates with Canadian running clubs, hockey teams, cycling groups, and stores as part of a community-focused growth strategy. Rather than focusing just on elite pros, GRYND typically refers to its target audience as everyday athletes – people who balance sport, job, family life, and other commitments.

Designed for Training in the Real World

Convenience is central to GRYND’s product design. Energy waffles are flat, individually wrapped, and easy to transport while running, cycling, or doing other sports. The business recommends them for a variety of situations involving physical exertion, including before exercise and periodically during lengthier sessions. This focus highlights one of the biggest challenges in sports nutrition. A performance food may have an amazing nutritional profile. Still, if it is difficult to transport, unpleasant to eat during exercise, or inconvenient during a race or game, its practical utility is restricted. GRYND’s strategy therefore focuses equally on usability and nutrition.

Building Sports Nutrition With a Canadian Identity

GRYND’s Canadian identity goes beyond branding. The company was founded in Western Canada, manufactures its energy waffles in Ontario, uses Canadian maple syrup, and distributes its products to Canadian sporting communities and stores. That positioning distinguishes GRYND in a sports nutrition market dominated by huge worldwide brands. Rather than simply reproducing established items, the company blends well-known Canadian ingredients and local production relationships into new products. Another example is the Maple Saskatoon Berry flavour, which combines maple with a berry closely linked to Western Canadian cuisine.

Making Performance Nutrition More Approachable

GRYND’s success reflects a broader shift in consumer attitudes toward sports nutrition. Performance items are no longer limited to professional athletes or marathon runners. Recreational runners, cyclists, hockey players, hikers, gym-goers, and parents with hectic schedules are increasingly turning to handy nutrition items to support their active lifestyles. At the same time, many customers are paying greater attention to ingredient labels and seeking out familiar meals. GRYND is positioned at the crossroads of these two trends: performance-focused convenience and a real-food approach.

The Next Stage of GRYND

With over 150 Canadian retailers, over 50,000 athletes fueled, an expanding five-flavour waffle line, natural Endurance Butter, and a maple energy gel in development, GRYND is creating a strong foothold in Canada’s sports nutrition sector. Its proposition remains basic. Athletes want easy energy, but that doesn’t have to mean sacrificing familiar foods, taste, or a connection to where food comes from. GRYND aims to make everyday performance nutrition feel more like real food by blending Canadian maple syrup, organic ingredients, portable formats, and products based on firsthand sports experience.

That mindset fits a corporation founded on the idea that excellence comes from constant hard work. Your brilliance lies in the GRYND. Grynd.ca offers Canadian-made sports nutrition products.
