Journey of the Self: A Riveting Memoir on Mental Health by Ruth Poniarski

Small Business Canada

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial time to shed light on the often-hidden struggles individuals face in their journey towards mental well-being. In this poignant period, CanadianSME features a compelling memoir by Ruth Poniarski, titled “Journey of the Self-Memoir of an Artist.” Through her gripping account, Ruth unveils the harsh realities of mental illness, providing a beacon of hope for those who may feel isolated in their struggles.

Ruth’s journey, chronicled in her memoir, takes an unexpected turn during a college party where she inadvertently ingests angel dust (PCP). This seemingly innocent event triggers a series of death-defying nervous breakdowns, leading to a harrowing accident that resulted in a thirty-foot fall. “I sailed between two worlds,” reflects Ruth, “between the ‘one’ that I knew and the place that I feared.”

The memoir touches on several hot topics, shedding light on the challenges of battling mental illness when there are no living family members left. Ruth’s experiences highlight the dangers of drug use, particularly the horrifying consequences of consuming PCP. She emphasizes the importance of finding the right doctor and treatment for an unknown condition, a process she navigated during her struggle with mental health.

Ruth’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the potential dangers lurking in seemingly harmless situations, like a night at a college party. The memoir reveals how an ordinary event can spiral into a never-ending nightmare, illustrating the profound impact that mental illness can have on an individual’s life.

Throughout her narrative, Ruth openly discusses her battle with anxiety, depression, and mania, accompanied by severe insomnia. The memoir becomes a guide for those grappling with similar challenges, as Ruth shares her journey to find the right treatment and diagnosis, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever before. “Never abandon hope in the waking hours of affliction,” urges Ruth, encapsulating her unwavering spirit.

The memoir delves into a range of compelling topics, offering insights into establishing healthy relationships, finding one’s passion and the perfect mate, understanding coping patterns with stress, and discovering oneself and one’s limitations. As an artist since 1988, Ruth incorporates her captivating artwork into the narrative, creating a unique blend of personal expression and visual representation of her inner struggles.

“I wrote my memoir with a mission,” explains Ruth. “To educate those suffering from mental illness, to show them that healing is possible, and that they are not alone in this complex and isolating world. I want to inspire readers with my relentless pursuit of inner peace and a fulfilling life.”

Ruth Poniarski
Long Island native Ruth Poniarski has released her first book, Journey of the Self: Memoir of an Artist, published by Charlotte, North Carolina-based Warren Publishing. Poniarski's unflinchingly honest memoir shares her coming-of-age story through the lenses of mental illness, disability, and steadfast determination. For years, Poniarski struggled to cope with her new reality as she undertook a rigorous architectural program, sought out new friends (and the perfect mate), and battled through the depths of mental illness. Her journey led her in all directions as she sought comfort, solace, stability and love. Now an accomplished artist, Poniarski considers her memoir to be a portrait of sorts. "This book, like many of my paintings, is about introspection," she says. "So many of us, particularly when we're young, seek definition through labels or through what others think of us. It's so easy to say, 'I have bipolar disorder, therefore, X' or 'So and so doesn't love me the way I love him, therefore, Y.' But none of that is who we truly are."
