Trailblazing Women Inspire New Gender Equity Digital Marketing Scholarship

Small Business Canada

The world of Canadian media and public relations wouldn’t be the same today if it weren’t for two talented, passionate, and determined sisters. Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Judy Lewis and Deborah Weinstein, two trailblazers in the field, who shared their experiences, triumphs, and insights into navigating a landscape historically dominated by men.

Judy and Deborah were pioneers in championing honest, ethical marketing practices that prioritized authenticity and transparency. “We really wanted to market on honest, ethical information,” Judy explains, “We really felt that there was a need for companies and executives to learn how to speak to the media and to be authentic.”

While there were plenty of hurdles, the pair didn’t let anything doubt the value they knew they could bring to the industry. “While we knew that chauvinism was alive and well, we never let it limit us,” Judy asserts. “We were welcomed into the C-suite because we had great information to share.” As a testament to the pair’s resilient attitude, Judy adds, “Now, did we run into weird situations? Were there situations where we were uncomfortable because we were women? Yes. But then we just didn’t work with those men.”

Both Judy and Deborah are passionate advocates for diversity and inclusion, recognizing the importance of mentorship and support networks in empowering the next generation of female leaders. Judy expresses pride in their role as mentors, coaches, and collaborators in advancing the success of young women in the profession. “We really are honoured to have mentored and coached, and worked together with young women to advance their success in this profession,” Judy affirms.

Judy and Deborah’s impact extends far beyond their individual achievements, as they have been instrumental in driving industry-wide changes and advocating for important causes. This includes getting 18 agencies to sign a pledge to pay their interns, which largely shaped the way the industry is today. Judy also emphasizes the role of associations in amplifying the voices of women and effecting meaningful change. “Through the associations, we really have advanced that voice in a big way,” Judy states. “You can really have an impact on many.” Deborah recalls their successful advocacy for the payment of interns, “We actively advocated for the payment of interns,” she recalls.

When Jelly Academy saw Judy and Deborah inducted into the Marketing News Canada PR Hall of Fame, we knew they were the perfect pair to name our Gender Equality Scholarship after. The journeys of Judy Lewis and Deborah Weinstein serve as inspiring testaments to the resilience, innovation, and leadership of women in marketing and public relations. Their experiences and accomplishments showcase the importance of perseverance, integrity, and trusting yourself enough to break barriers.

“Not only have Judy and Deborah spearheaded some of the most memorable and exciting PR experiences across Canada, but they have paved the way for women to enter and thrive in a public relations career.” says Darian Kovacs, partner at Jelly Academy.

Jelly Academy is thrilled to continue their ongoing legacy through a scholarship that encourages gender equity while removing barriers for those with a passion for marketing and PR.
