Vasanti Cosmetics has spent more than two decades building a Canadian beauty business on a simple but important idea: people should be able to find products that suit their skin, not feel excluded from the beauty conversation. Women of colour founded Vasanti after struggling to find makeup that fit their skin tones. It has now developed into a makeup and skincare company that values inclusion, clean formulations, cruelty-free practices, and high-performance products. Its ideology is summed up in the idea that customers should be able to “look and feel like themselves.”
A Canadian Beauty Brand Born From Sisterhood
Vasanti’s origins trace back to the late 1990s. The brand says its story began when its founders looked for beauty products that complemented their skin tones while staying natural and comfortable. According to an official Vasanti account, the company was founded in 1999 and is built on sisterhood. One main inspiration was co-founder Pinki Gosal’s struggle to find a concealer that properly treated her dark under-eye circles without looking ashy, pink, or unnatural against her complexion.
That challenge became an opportunity. Working with cosmetic specialists and studying product development, the creators began investigating tones and formulations better suited to people mainstream beauty products had previously underserved. Vasanti comes from Sanskrit and means “spring” or “springtime,” reflecting the brand’s emphasis on freshness, rejuvenation, and natural beauty.
Making Inclusivity Part of Product Development
Vasanti defines inclusivity as something more than just advertising images. It is closely tied to the company’s founding. The creators say their own experiences as women of colour made it difficult to find appropriate skincare and cosmetics. As a result, they wanted all customers to feel included, regardless of ethnicity, skin colour, or background. Vasanti’s Colour Correcting Concealer is one example, designed to balance dark circles and discolouration rather than simply conceal them with a traditional skin-tone concealer.
The concept has become a hallmark of the brand. Vasanti’s colour-correcting cosmetics use corrective tones to counteract obvious darkness and hyperpigmentation while preventing the gray or ashy appearance that can appear on medium and darker complexions. Vasanti’s Liquid V02 Dark Circle Eraser won Best Concealer at the 2023 Beauty Awards, which were sponsored by Canadian newspapers such as FASHION and Chatelaine. The judges praised the made-in-Canada product’s efficiency as a colour corrector for dark circles on medium complexion tones.
Clean Beauty Without Sacrificing Performance
Vasanti bases its formulations on the philosophy of remaining as natural as possible while ensuring safety and efficacy. The company says its products are cruelty-free and vegan, and the brand is PETA-certified. Vasanti also claims its formulations conform to Health Canada criteria and recommendations, as well as regulatory frameworks in other foreign markets. It also avoids parabens, mineral oil, sulphates (SLS and SLES), additional phthalates, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, triclosan, coal tar, hydroquinone, and microbeads.
Vasanti emphasizes practicality over just excluding cosmetics when defining clean beauty. Its approach typically blends natural-based formulations with active ingredients designed to address specific concerns such as dullness, uneven complexion, dryness, and dark circles. The company’s FAQ further states that its goods are completely vegan and that Vasanti does not test them on animals.
Creating Products That Do More
Vasanti’s product approach includes multifunctionality. The company claims it intentionally creates items that serve multiple functions, helping consumers simplify increasingly complex beauty routines. Its current product line includes cleansers, exfoliants, serums, moisturizers, eye treatments, concealers, eyeliners, lip products, and complexion solutions. One of its best-selling products is the BrightenUp! It combines physical and chemical exfoliation.
Other heavily promoted goods include the Kajal Waterline Eyeliner Pencil, Glow Boosting Brightening Serum, Eye Wonder 2.0 Dark Circle Eye Cream, and Miracle Mask 5 in 1. This strategy aligns with Vasanti’s broader philosophy of accessible luxury: creating high-performing formulae while positioning goods as affordable alternatives to traditional prestige beauty.
A New Chapter for the Brand
Vasanti launched a new development phase in 2025, with revamped branding centred on sisterhood and inclusivity. The redesign was supported by new product innovations, such as Sun’s Up! Tinted Mineral Sunscreen. The mineral sunscreen was created to provide sun protection while adding brightness and addressing a long-standing issue with mineral SPF formulations: the apparent white cast they can leave on certain skin tones. Vasanti also expanded the shade range of its Colour Correcting Concealer, while maintaining the brand’s original inclusive approach. Sun’s Up! is now one of the company’s most prominently displayed products, alongside proven Vasanti bestsellers, showing how the brand continues to blend skincare benefits with makeup-focused performance.
More Than 25 Years in Canadian Beauty
Remaining relevant for more than 25 years is essential in an industry with fast-shifting trends and frequent new introductions. Vasanti has grown from an emerging colour cosmetics firm into a larger beauty company while retaining key aspects of its original identity, including Canadian heritage, female entrepreneurship, diversity, and products designed to address specific consumer concerns. The company has also maintained a close link with Canadian manufacturing. Vasanti’s website currently emphasizes its Canadian identity and offers products labelled as Made in Canada, and recent Canadian press has also highlighted the company’s in-house product development.
Its durability teaches Canadian businesses a vital lesson: often, the strongest brand proposition begins when creators recognize a problem they have personally encountered and learn that many other consumers face the same dilemma.
Beauty Built Around Belonging
Vasanti Cosmetics entered the market because the founders didn’t believe their personal needs were being met. More than two decades later, that experience still shapes how the organization talks about beauty. Vasanti’s unique combination of inclusive complexion treatments, vegan and cruelty-free methods, multifunctional skincare, and affordable luxury distinguishes it in Canada’s beauty industry.
Most importantly, its narrative shows how inclusion can evolve from a marketing statement into an integral part of a company’s product development strategy. Vasanti believes beauty is ultimately about giving people the products and confidence they need to feel comfortable in their own skin, rather than hiding their individuality.
